Leo Varadkar is a Irish politician who served as the Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland from 2017 to 2020. He was also the leader of Fine Gael, the country’s largest political party, from 2017 to 2020.

Varadkar was first elected to the Irish parliament (Dáil Éireann) in 2007 as a representative of Dublin West. In 2011, he was appointed as the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport by Taoiseach Enda Kenny. In 2014, he was appointed as the Minister for Health.

In 2017, Varadkar was elected as the leader of Fine Gael, succeeding Enda Kenny. He was then appointed as Taoiseach by President Michael D. Higgins, becoming the first openly gay person and the first person of Indian descent to hold the office.

As Taoiseach, Varadkar focused on issues such as Brexit, the housing crisis, and the need for a united Ireland. He also oversaw the implementation of the National Broadband Plan, which aimed to provide high-speed internet access to all parts of the country.

In 2020, Varadkar rotated as Taoiseach and remained leader of Fine Gael, following the party’s poor performance in the general election. He remains a member of parliament, and as of 2023 he is the leader of the country.
