Bertie Ahern served as the Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland from 1997 to 2008.

He was a member of the Fianna Fáil party and led the country during a period of economic growth and prosperity. Ahern was widely popular during his time in office and was credited with helping to bring peace to Northern Ireland through the Good Friday Agreement of 1998.

However, Ahern’s popularity began to decline in the early 2000s due to allegations of financial impropriety. In 2008, a tribunal investigating payments made to politicians found that Ahern had failed to provide a credible explanation for large sums of money that had been lodged to his personal bank accounts. Ahern resigned as Taoiseach later that year.

The investigation and subsequent scandal had a significant impact on Ahern’s legacy and reputation. While he was once seen as one of the most popular and successful Irish leaders of recent times, he is now remembered more for the financial scandal that ended his career.
